Newsletter April 27-May 1

Dear Parents:
This week is going to be a crazy week. We are doing testing in the mornings every day. This means we will not be doing spelling, so no spelling homework this week, or math, since they are being tested on math and I don't want the students to feel overloaded! However, they should all have a list of spelling words for the Spelling Bee in 2 weeks and can practice those words instead of regular spelling. Also, we have over 100 pages in Benjamin West to read and only 4 weeks to finish it! So we will be pushing ahead in that book with reading assignments every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I will post those as soon as I give them and have the students mark their books as well. We may read from the book sometimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well, so please make sure they bring their book to school every day. Next, I wanted to thank everyone who helped out with our Heidi party. It was a great success! The students enjoyed it all and learned some fun things in a great hands-on way! Finally, we are done with Jamestown and it looks fantastic! I encourage all of you to come and see the creativity and hard work of our class!

Devotional: We will be reading from Malachi and learning about tithing and fast offerings. Their memorization is Malachi 3:8-10. This is a longer passage, but we will work on it a little at a time and it would help if you could quiz them on it at home.

Literature: Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin. Please, please, please help your child remember to do the reading assignments and bring their books to school. This book is an easier read than Heidi, so it shouldn't take as much time.

Science: We have been learning about plants, and in particular the different varieties of leaf venation. We collected and dried some of these varieties and are going to make Notebook pages with the samples!

History: We began learning about the reasons the Colonists fought the Revolutionary War last week, and will continue this week with learning about the actual war itself: how it began, who was involved, what happened at some of the battles, how it ended, etc. Then next week, we will discuss the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights in particular.

Geography: We are beginning a new unit on North America, and will first learn about the major rivers on our continent. Next week we will move on to mountain ranges.

One last piece of information for you: I gave the students a test on the 50 Greek and Latin words we have learned and the average score was 46. So great job, students!

Thank you,
Jeanette Martinez

Memorization

For the memorization this week, the students need to know Job 19:25-26. They will need to pass it off by Friday afternoon. We will spend some time in class working on it, but it would also be helpful for you to quiz them on it at home.
Thanks!
